3. 2009 CABE Communication Award Recipients: Connecticut Association of Boards of Education just announced recipients of their prestigious 2009 Communication Awards! HKMS received
Winner Status for Mrs. Jen Rose’s seventh grade project entitled
“My Three Words" and
Honorable Mention for Mrs. Nancy Culliton’s Gang Green project.
4. Reflections Program: The National PTA annual Reflections Program has begun. Reflections is an annual arts recognition program sponsored by the National PTA. It is designed to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works. There are six categories of participation: Visual Arts, Literature, Photography, Music, Dance, and Film.
The program is structured for PTA’s to recognize students at the local, council, state and national levels. Entries are first judged at the local level, where selected works are chosen to represent PTA at each subsequent level. Once entries reach the state level, the state PTA may select entries to submit to the National PTA.
This year’s Reflection theme: “Beauty is……”
All entries from SSES and HKMS will be exhibited in a gallery setting at the Easton Public Library in December. Entry deadline: November 30, 2009.
If your child is interested, please fill out a form in the Main Office or contact Mrs. Solway @261-1551
5. Veteran’s Day Program:
We are looking for veterans to spend about 40 minutes in our Social Studies classes for Veteran’s Day. We would like the veteran to speak for part of the time, talking about his or her experience. The balance of the time would be open for student questions. If you are, or know, a veteran who would be interested in participating, please contact your child’s Social Studies teacher by Friday, October 9th.
Additionally, our Veteran’s Day Committee is encouraging students to donate the items listed below to support the troops who are serving our country in Afghanistan. We are suggesting items by grade level and recommend purchase by going beyond brand-name products. Bulk tends to be more cost effective. The items listed are ones that are particularly requested by the troops. All items should be brought to your child’s grade level Social Studies teacher. Collection will start immediately and end on Veteran’s Day.
Grade 6: toothbrushes with covers, toothpaste and dental floss
Grade 7: individual powdered drink mixes (Gatorade, Crystal Light), hand wipes and gum
Grade 8: white sox, chapped stick, soap, and hand warmers
Any questions, call Carol Weinshel @ 268-8651 Ext. 419
6. Tri-State Science Visit: Science teachers, supervisors, principals, and perhaps a superintendent from the metropolitan New York area will be spending Wednesday October 21, Thursday, October 22 and Friday, October 23 visiting our schools, observing lessons, and speaking with students, parents and teachers about our Science Program. As ‘critical friends’, the Tri-State Visiting Team will be reviewing student performance and making recommendations for improvement. Information regarding the results of the visit will be communicated once the visiting team submits a report to our Board of Education.
7. Principal’s Series: Mark your calendar for October 29, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in our Media Center. Mrs. Kaplan will be sharing information about bullying! Don’t miss this evening!
8. Red Ribbon Week: Next week, Pat Thomas will lead our students as each plants a red tulip bulb. 400 Red bulbs will be planted on the side of the hill! The red bulbs symbolize our students’ commitment to live drug free lives. If you are free to help Pat, please email her @PThomas@eastonps.org.
Best regards,
