Easton Board of Education Meeting: Mark your calendar to attend a special BOE meeting re: 2010-11 Easton schools’ operating budget. Meeting will be in our Media Center starting at 7:30 p.m.
Connecticut Mastery Tests:
As you know, March is the month when Connecticut Mastery Tests are administered in Grades 3 -8. Please find below the testing schedule so that you can avoid making medical/dental appointments which may cause your child to be absent during an assessment.
The following tests will be administered from 8:30 a.m. until approximately 10:00 a.m. and will be taken by all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Total time per test is dependent on the subject matter and may range from 55 minutes to 80 minutes.
Tuesday, March 2: Direct Assessment of Writing
Wednesday, March 3: Reading Comprehension, Part I
Thursday, March 4: Reading Comprehension, Part II
Tuesday, March 9: Math
Wednesday, March 10: Math
Thursday, March 11: Math
Tuesday, March 16: Degrees of Reading Power
Wednesday, March 17: Editing and Revising
Thursday, March 18: Science
Students who are absent during the CMTs on any of the above dates will be able to make up tests but they will miss regularly scheduled classes in order to do so. Make up sessions will be on-going from March 8 until the end of the month, if needed.
During this testing period, I ask that you do the following:
ü Demonstrate a positive ‘can-do’ attitude, encourage your child to do his/her ‘personal best’ and talk about the importance of these assessments (while keeping them in perspective). Best effort is what counts! If children are not motivated to do their best, they will mark answers randomly, finish tests quickly and carelessly, and fail to do their best critical thinking.
ü Make sure that your child receives a good night’s rest each evening, eats a good breakfast each morning, and comes to school with extra number 2 pencils.
Easton Learning Foundation
The Easton Learning Foundation encourages all community members to attend its 5th Anniversary Birthday Party on March 13, 2010 from 7-10 PM at Aspetuck Valley Country Club! Learn more about the party plans by visiting ELF’s web site today!
If you cannot attend on the 13th, please consider making a donation to ELF as they strive to launch an Engineering Innovation Lab here at HKMS. The lab will inspire students towards the pursuit of careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. All donations are appreciated, however small or large.
As well, via ELF’s web site, you can participate in online bidding for exciting items, trips, etc.
This week’s auction item: FRONT ROW TICKETS FOR THE Saturday night performance of our school play!! Who can resist??
Thank you for helping ELF bring an engineering lab to HKMS!
Helping Haiti
Children learn empathy and compassion by watching others who model kindness and generosity. With that in mind, our 7th graders along with Student Council have been selling special back packs and bracelets to raise monies to be sent to Physicians without Borders.
HKMS Track Team
I am pleased to inform you that Mr. Kyle Astle, 8th grade Social Studies teacher, has proposed the formation of a club at HKMS for all students interested in learning and competing in the sport of Track (primary emphasis on running events). Track practice will be held two days a week (Mondays and Thursdays). Each practice will last 75 minutes (3:00 -4:15 p.m.) after school. The Track club will begin the last week in March (first meeting March 29th) and conclude its season at the end of May/first week in June at the 3rd CT Middle School Championship! All HKMS students regardless of gender or grade level are encouraged to participate in the track club. Please email Kyle if your child is interested!

QSP Magazine Drive: Please ask your child to return their magazine orders. To date, we have no orders from eighth grade, 16 from seventh grade, and 49 from sixth grade. Proceeds go directly to 8th grade government and Student Council as they play end-of-year events.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
On behalf of our school community, I would like to thank Mr. Gary Simone, Head of Park & Recreation, for removing the unsafe bleachers from our gym this past week. We appreciate all that you do!
Best regards,
